Interview WITH JOSÉ
FACTORY VISIT
We recently took a trip to northern Portugal, specifically the Porto and Braga areas. We visit the factories several times a year to check quality and ensure that the development and standard are of the highest quality.
Every time we visit the factory, we are reminded of why we have chosen them as a partner. The factory is family-owned and has existed for several generations. Their focus on quality, ethics and good craftsmanship is 1:1 with our values.
During the visit, we reviewed new methods, tested washes and adjusted fits on upcoming styles. We also got a look at new fabrics and details that we look forward to showing you in future collections.

JOSÉ
José is 46 years old and a fan of the football team Benfica (SLB), but generally enjoys a good football match. His favourite football player today is Cristiano Ronaldo, but he especially likes Paolo Maldini, the former captain of AC Milan.
José's role in the factory is to start the production process, lay out the fabric and carry out the cutting and separating process so that everything goes perfectly. He has worked as a pattern cutter for 18 years, so he has a lot of experience with his craft.
We asked José what a typical working day looks like for him, and he said that every day is different, with more or less demands. Some days he is able to do his job and help other workstations in the factory, but there are some days when he cannot leave his station, so as not to leave the work behind. Some days the work flows well, but on other days there may be more working hours to meet the demands and needs of the customers.

BEHIND THE PROCESS
What tools or software do you use for pattern cutting and how do they help you in your work?
I work with a Gerber XLC7000 machine connected to a CAD program. Although it is not a high volume machine, it is tuned correctly to ensure high quality and precise cutting.
Is there a difference between pattern cutting for jeans versus canvas pants/other non-denim bottoms?
From my point of view, no. In all fabrics we should ensure the highest quality and precision.
What is the most satisfying part of your job?
The most satisfying part of my job is getting positive feedback from the company’s customers and feeling that they are happy with my work. I grew up with compliments and also with criticism because I always try to do my best and learn every day.
Are there any special techniques or secrets behind your work?
For me, there are no secrets; I call it being a professional. Even if you make mistakes, you should always do your best. I always try to stay up to date with the latest technologies and techniques to ensure the best possible work, both from the machinery and myself.
Behind the scenes
CUTTING AND SEPARATION PROCESS
This is where production begins to take shape. After the rolls of fabric are inspected and prepared, each piece is precisely cut according to digital patterns.
Using manual or automated cutting tools, layers of fabric are separated into individual components: sleeves, collars, etc.
Accuracy here is crucial: it ensures uniformity, minimizes material waste and sets the standard for every piece of clothing that follows.
